TAIGA ON WHEELS

autumn

A glimpse behind the scenes: Experience firsthand what the endproduct «dog sledding tour» involves and accompany our dogs during their training in autumn. Not just as a guest, but as a trainee. You are right in the middle - be it when it comes to training, feeding the dogs and everything else that goes with it.

Detailed program

Arrival and departure day is Friday or Sunday.

The following program is meant as an example to give you an overview. Onsite we discuss the program for the week which can be shaped freely and filled with content, so that the week really meets your wishes. Among other things, we have to consider the actual training state of the dogs.

Day 1: Arrival

You travel individually to Vilhelmina and we organize the transfer from the airport or the bus station to our camp. You are accommodated in a double room where you have time to set up yourself. Afterwards we get to know each other during a cozy dinner. During dinnertime, we present all the options for organizing the week and clarify open questions.

Day 2: Planning and husky trekking

Aft breakfast time, we discuss the possibilities for the week and answer all your questions. Our goal is it to put together a program according to your wishes and ideas. Afterwards you get to know the dogs and you get a first introduction into the handling of the dogs with focus of communication. Needless to say, lots of cuddles are included.
In the afternoon, we explore the surrounding nature on a hike accompanied by the dogs.

Day 3-4: Training and overnight stay

After breakfast, you get to know the basics of dogtraining including how to drive cart and we prepare the upcoming training with an overnight stay in a tent. As soon as everything is ready, the dogs get their harness and they are put in front of the cart. During autumn it is not possible to drive with the sleds, therefore we use carts on wheels. There are two different carts for 8 respectively 6 dogs (when two people share one cart). We start our training session directly at the camp and you get to drive your own dogteam under supervision.
Approx. 14 km later, we reach our destination and we take care of the dogs and begin to prepare our campsite. Our heatable tent offers comfort even during low temperatures. As everyone has settled in, we prepare dinner on the campfire.
The next day, we pack everything and head back to the camp.

Day 5: Leisure day

Todays program is totally up to you. Possible are the following activities:

  • exploring the surroundings (by foot)
  • sightseeing in Vilhelmina, visit of Risfjells Sameslöjd (sami souvenirshop and museum) and shopping of local specialities
  • trainingsession bikejöring or dogscooter
  • musher workshop: ABC of the sleddog sport (from puppy to sleddog, material, problem solving, etc.

Day 6-7: Training and overnight stay

The difference to the first training days is, that we pack everything (equipment and dogs) and drive with car and trailer to our starting point. By doing this, the dogs get to train the process of being loaded and driven. It is important that the dogs feel safe during this procedure, which must be trained. Furthermore, the training takes place in a new territory which offers you and the dogs some variety. As usual, we take care of the dogs after the training, set up the campsite and prepare the dinner on the campfire. The next morning, we reverse and head back to the camp.

Day 8: Departure

After saying goodbye to the dogs, we organize the transfer back to Vilhelmina and you start your trip home.
