HIKINGWEEK: URSKOGSLEDEN

autumnA close to 50 km long multi-day hike which leads us along picturesquely situated lakes through old and pristine spruce and pine forests without crossing a single road.  Far away from the big hiking routes, this "insider tip" offers pure nature and silence.

Detailed program

Arrival and departure day are freely choosable upon consultation.

Day 1: Arrival

You travel individually to Vilhelmina and we organize the transfer from the airport or the bus station to our camp. You are accommodated in a double room where you have time to set up yourself. Afterwards we get to know each other during a cozy dinner.

Day 2: Husky trekking

Today you get to know our fourlegged companions. After some first cuddles and dogkisses, we load the dogs into the car and drive approx. 15 min to the base of our backyard mountain Björnberget. You get a hikingbelt and the dogs get their harness. Afterwards we begin our hike up to the highest point. The trail takes us over hill and dale and it can sporadially be quite wet. Good and waterproof hikingboots are key. But the effort is totally worth it: During good weatherconditions, we will be rewarded with a spectacular 360° panorama.
After a traditional swedish «fika», we hike back to our starting point. In the evening we prepare the multi-day hike together. Based on today's experiences with a dog on the hikingbelt, you decide whether a fourlegged friend should accompany you on the multi-day hike or rather not. You have to consider that the strength of the dogs is very pleasant on ascents, but the dogs do not make any difference whether it goes up or down - they pull no matter what.

Day 3-6: Multi-day hike along the "Urskolgsleden"

The Urskogsleden - or Primeval Forest Trail - is located in the eastern part of the Marsfjäll Nature Reserve and is about 50 km long. As the name suggests, the trail leads mainly through pristine and untouched forests, past picturesque lakes.

Overnight day 3: Matskan or Blerik Stuga (10 resp. 16 km)

By car we drive to our starting point in the Marsfjäll nature reserve. Across country the trail leads us the first two kilometers through old and original spruce forest. Then we follow two larger lakes until we reach Matskan stuga after another 8 kilometers. Depending on our mood we stay overnight or hike on to the next cabin, which is another 6 kilometers away. Both cabins are located by the water, whereby Blerik stuga, in contrast to Matskan stuga, is located by a lake and thus offers the possibility of rowing or fishing.

Overnight day 4: Nattsjö Stuga (11 resp. 17 km)

Depending on which cabin we chose the day before, our hiking distance today is 11 or 17 kilometers. The destination is Nattsjö stuga, which is idyllically situated by a lake. The trail leads us mostly through old and original pine forest (the oldest pines are up to 500 years old).

Overnight day 5: Dainanäs Stuga (12 km)

From Nattsjö stuga the trail leads steadily uphill until we finally climb Måsberget (670 m.a.s.l.). If the weather is good, we can take a break to enjoy the spectacular view over the forest landscape with Marsfjäll in the background.
The rest of the trail leads us down from Måsberget, through swamps and bogs, until we reach the shore of lake Stor Dainan. We follow the lake for a good distance and then hike the last two kilometers through the forest up to Dainanäs Stuga. Dainanäs Stuga belongs to an old farm from the end of the 18th century.

Overnight 6: Stor Dainan (6 km)

The last stage of the Urskogsleden leads us again through old spruce forest and partly along the lake Stor Dainan. When we reach our destination, we can end the hike with a cozy barbecue (or we can have someone pick us up right away).

Overnight stays

The plan is to spend the night in simple wilderness cabins. However, these can not be reserved and it may happen that they are occupied by other people. For this case we carry a tent, which we can put up in any place.

Day 7: Departure

After saying goodbye to the dogs, we organize the transfer back to Vilhelmina and you start your trip home.
